I've been a beat maker from the beginning and have almost no experience with turntables to the point that I have trouble relating to music in circular motion as all I hear is parts and phrases, like mental sampling. My live setup reflects that thinking.
But I love watching people DJ, especially turntablists, the dedication it takes to get that good is next level and I'm always grateful to be witness to such skill and love of music.
Today I step out of my comfort zone entirely for something which approximates an orthodox DJ setup. No cue points, mixing by ear. Was surprised to discover that I can beat match fast despite having almost no experience with turntables and being limited in this way without my usual tools made me discover and invent other ways of having fun with the simple functions in a mixer.
There are lots of people out in the world who feel that there's a correct way of having fun with music, but I'm grateful to be living in an era where everybody is different and there are are countless tools which allow you to perform in a way that's most natural to you and you can cross paths with people from all over the world, from entirely different backgrounds and still feel the connection that you share through music and exchange thoughts and experiences and learn from each other. I don't think there's anything greater than that.
